💰 The most expensive state for boarding & grooming

For many, the price of owning a puppers is priceless. But a recent study by MarketWatch aimed to actually put a price on the annual cost of dog ownership in each state.

What did they find?

  • The average lifetime cost of owning a dog exceeds $30,000 in 13 states. The national average cost? $28,801.

  • Californians pay the highest lifetime ownership cost of any state, at nearly $35k per pup.

  • The average amount spent on grooming per dog across the US? Close your eyes for this one (it’s not pretty!)… $193 a year.

  • And the most expensive state in 2023 for grooming is a surprising one! Drumroll please… the land of maple syrup… Vermont!

In a nutshell, this study highlights the continued rise of the humanization of our pets. American’s have never spent more money on their pets than this year, and it’s not slowing down!

🤓 5 Safety Tips for a Calm and Comfortable Grooming Experience

Last week, we had the honor of sitting down with Chrissy Neumyer Smith, an award winning groomer and educator. She left us with some advice for pet owners that’s important to keep in mind as groomers.

Here are the 5 safety tips she recommends to every pet owner looking to create a calmer grooming experience:

1. Choose a groomer who prioritizes safety - Look for groomers who have proper certifications, experience, and a track record of putting safety of the dogs first.

2. Familiarize your dog with the grooming environment - Consider taking your dog for short visits to the groomer’s facility before the actual grooming session.

3. Communicate any hesitancies or fears - Sharing this early will allow the groomer to understand and address specific concerns, creating a more comfortable experience for your dog.

4. Invest in positive reinforcement training - This is no secret, but so many owners neglect this foundational truth. Utilize treats, praise, and rewards before and after grooming to reinforce good behavior.

5. Patience, patience, patience - Grooming is a process, be patient and recognize that it may take time for your groomer to perfect your dog’s cut.

Knowing what pet owner’s are looking for, can help us craft a better experience in our salons. If you want to dive into the full article, click here to see all of Chrissy’s recommendations when it comes to comfortable grooming.
